Abstract
This year Contemporary Nurse: A Journal for the Australian Nursing Profession is commencing its fifth year of publication. As with all good five year plans, the department editors have reviewed the journal to ensure commitment to respond to the emerging needs of the nursing profession. As a result, this year we will be introducing new departments as well as continuing to maintain the high standards of the established format.
The new department titled 'Eminent Editor' introduced in this issue, will complement the Feature Articles section. Each year Contemporary Nurse will invite a leading contributor to the development of nursing in Australia, to assume the role of 'Eminent Editor'. The invited Editor will have the responsibility to establish the format for their department and where appropriate, maintain the journal's double blind peer review process.
Our first Eminent Editor, Dr Annette Street, is well known for her publications on critical research, particularly her latest book Nursing Replay (1995). The impetus to invitation Annette to be the inaugural editor of this new and exciting department, stems from her enthusiastic commitment to nursing and nursing research. Over recent years, there has been an increasing interest by Australian nurses in qualitative research to explain nursing praxis with a subsequent proliferation of research reports forwarded to Contemporary Nurse for consideration. Over the ensuing year, Annette will take up the gauntlet to provide guidance to these nurse researchers to turn their research findings into a report suitable for publication.
