Advances in Contemporary Nursing series from Contemporary Nurse journal
Contemporary Nurse is growing from strength to strength - in terms of increased manuscript submissions, the quality of submitted manuscripts, new international subscribers, online subscribers and improving value for money to print subscribers. Consider the price per page of Contemporary Nurse since 2001 (GST included):
| Volume 10 (2001): | 280 pages for $230 = $0.82/page (incl GST) |
| Volumes 11 & 12 (2001/02): | 592 pages for $399 = $0.67/page (incl GST) |
| Volumes 13 & 14 (2002/03): | 612 pages for $399 = $0.65/page (incl GST) |
| Volumes 15 & 16 (2003/04): | 610 pages for $399 = $0.65/page (incl GST) |
| Volumes 17 & 18 (2004/05): | 612 pages for $440 = $0.72/page (incl GST) |
| Volumes 19 - 21 (2005/06): | 864 pages for $550 = $0.64/page (incl GST) |
Manuscript submissions to date indicate that Contemporary Nurse will grow from 3 volumes a year (July 2005 - June 2006) to 4 volumes a year (July 2006 - June 2007) then stay at that level for at least three years (i.e., until July 2009). These 4 volumes per annum will contain 4 quarterly issues of regular Contemporary Nurse feature articles and 4 quarterly special issues, announced well in advance (i.e., 4 volumes in 8 issues).
We are aware that Contemporary Nurse competes for funding in library budgets so propose here an innovation that may help to bring the price per page down in 2006/07. The innovation is that we continue to include special issues in a regular subscription to Contemporary Nurse, then also make them available as a separate Contemporary Nurse book series - Advances in Contemporary Nursing - and separately as course readers at volume discounts.
Advances in Contemporary Nursing book series titles will include:
Backset issues (2003-2006) for new subscribers to establish their collection:

Advances in Complementary and Integrative Nursing (ISBN 978-0-975771-07-X)
Subscription issues for 2008/09 and beyond: proposals are invited from readers.
We have several months to decide on the price structure for 2006/07 so invite you as our valued subscriber to reflect and comment on the following idea:
Contemporary Nurse Journal (July 2006 - June 2007) ISSN 1037-6178
Volumes 21 - 24 (4 volumes in 8 issues of 144 pages = 1152 pages)
Print subscription: $660.00 incl. GST (= $0.57/page or 21% off the 2004/05 page rate)
and
Advances in Contemporary Nursing (July 2006 - June 2007) a book series from CNJ:
2 volumes in 4 issues of 144 pages = 576 pages, comprising:
- Advances in Indigenous Health Care (ISBN 978-0-975043-69-1)
- Advances in Recruitment, Retention & Training (ISBN 978-0-975771-00-6)
- Advances in Contemporary Community Health (ISBN 978-0-975771-02-0)
- Advances in Contemporary Aged Care (ISBN 978-0-975771-01-3)
Print subscription: $396.00 incl GST (= $0.69/page)
We are optimistic that this structure will allow us to reduce the Contemporary Nurse page rate in 2006/07 and supplement the erosion of print subscription income due to uptake of online subscriptions and subscription aggregation. Advances in Contemporary Nursing will also be available as boxed sets for libraries beginning their nursing collections. Please feel free to write to me directly at davidson@contemporarynurse.com with your views. We value them!
