Nursing in tune with music, Video - VHS format
School of Nursing Deakin University, Victoria

Hampstead Centre, Northfield SA
This 41 minute video covers many aspects of music therapy across the lifespan and was filmed in a number of locations throughout Victoria. Kay Stevens, the presenter/researcher/writer gives an introduction, historical notes and a brief commentary on each section.
The first section covers music as a calming agent for new born babies in a nursery. As a contrast an example of how music is combined with physical massage providing sensory stimuli and raising mental awareness in a partially comatose patient is shown. Further illustrations include the use of music with aged persons. Music is offered as an aid to reducing mental stress by stimulating happy memories and reminiscences. Another good example given is the use of soothing, familiar or chosen music to provide a pleasant distraction from the stress and pain associated with surgery and childbirth.
Overall the video provides a wide coverage of the subject, the audio and visual quality is excellent and the verbal commentaries are very lucid. It is recommended to anyone interested in music as a therapeutic agent in a wide field of health care.
