Abstract

This article discusses the experience, rationale for and limitations of the journal, namely - research participant's personal journal and the researcher's field journal as a method for collecting qualitative data. Numerous strengths are proposed for and limitations are countered in the use of the journal as a method.

This methods paper is aimed at nursing academics, authors and nursing students interested in the practical reality of research but who are also mindful of the necessity for rigour. A second paper will discuss the experience, rationale for and limitations of the group discussion as a suitable method for collecting qualitative data.
