With this, the first issue of the July 2003 – June 2004 subscription year, we are pleased to announce that subscription rates have been retained at the same level as the last two years. As in the past two years, two volumes (15 & 16) have been announced in 6 bi-monthly issues. Double issues, such as this one, will be published from time to time to ensure that accepted manuscripts are published promptly. This year promises more editorial dynamism, quality content and regional focus as Contemporary Nurse rapidly consolidates its position as a leading Asia Pacific journal for health care workers, managers, teachers, researchers and students.
The Guest Editorial and Opinion (previously termed 'Soapbox') pieces in this issue provide us with first hand experiences of the impact of SARS on nursing teaching and practice in Singapore and Toronto. The Guest Editorial was reviewed by our board members in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei. We are grateful to authors and editors alike for making time to document and critique their experiences during a very difficult period in their practice.
'Recruitment & Retention' has been introduced as a regular section from this issue for dedicated feature articles on this pressing topic. Articles in this issue address: quality of work-life for nurses; perceived status of nurses; and, implementation of an exit policy for nurses in a public hospital. Related articles will appear in the 'Recruitment & Retention' section in future issues of Contemporary Nurse. Megan-Jane Johnstone is working on a 'summit' issue of the journal dedicated to this topic with a leading Human Resources Management consultant (Alastair Rylatt) and US-based Guest Editor (Sharon Lynne Phillips), in 2004.
Advances in Contemporary Transcultural Nursing: Asia Pacific Readings: Volume 15/3 (October 2003) of Contemporary Nurse will be special issue of the journal dedicated to Asia Pacific Transcultural Nursing, co-ordinated by John Daly with a Guest Editorial by Professor Olga Kanitsaki AM (RMIT). With 15 papers from 50 authors in 7 nations, manuscripts have been reviewed through board members by over 100 peers in the UK, New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, Italy, South Africa, Singapore and Australia. The issue will also be made available as a separate book with its own ISBN 0975043617 at A$77.00 (incl GST & airmail in ANZ) or US$50.00 (excl postage ROW). Discount of 20% is available for course adoptions, to members of TCNS and members of national interest groups, such as TCN Society of the Royal College of Nursing, Australia.
As announced previously, Contemporary Nurse's book of best practice papers, Practice Wisdom for Contemporary Nurses (edited by Annette Street and Ruth Endacott) remains under development for late 2003. It now has a focus on Research Methods in response to your reviews. Many quality Methods and Clinical papers continue to appear in the journal. Best practice Clinical papers will appear in a dedicated Contemporary Nurse book in late 2004.
Editorial Board members, Carol Smith (Pennsylvania State University), Hester Klopper (University of Wittwatersrand), Annette Huntington (Massey University), Alcione Leite da Silva (Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Judith Donoghue (University of Technology, Sydney) are welcomed to the team. We thank them for the diligent refereeing they have already undertaken and look forward to working with them and their colleagues.
It was a particular pleasure to meet President Ue-Lin Chung again, and her colleagues, from the National Taipei College of Nursing, at the Nursing in a Technological World, International Nursing Conference in Brisbane on 4 July 2003. Referees are joining us from Taiwan and a special issue dedicated to Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Nursing is being planned for 2005, through NTCN's Graduate Institute.
As Contemporary Nurse grows, we encourage your colleagues and students to consult the following board members, according to their specialized functions, before submission: Marshelle Thobaben (Reviews Editor); Lynne Giddings (Methodology Editor); Thomas Wong (East Asian Research Editor); Uwe Flick (European Research Editor); Nicholas Procter (Book Reviews Editor); Kim Usher (Conference Editor).
In the December 2002 issue (volume 14/1) we acknowledged the invaluable contribution of our editors, authors and referees to Contemporary Nurse in 2002. In this issue (volume 15/1–2), we acknowledge the valuable contribution of our 'virtual' publishing team: Spencer Hor at Kum Vivar Printers in Malaysia; Karen Enkelaar as Desktop Publisher in Katoomba NSW; John Laidler as webmaster in North Ryde NSW; Raylee Myres as Reviews Coordinator, Suzanne Davidson as Marketing Director, Mary Meadows as Bookkeeper and Gary Phillips as IT manager in Maleny QLD. Thanks are also due to June and Neil Levy at CINAHL Information Systems in Glendale, California and Copyright Agency Ltd in Sydney for their continued support of the journal.
