Interdisciplinary collaboration

It could be asserted that health care professionals generally agree that the human service professions are facing problems so complex, that no single discipline can respond effectively to them. Attempts to respond to such problems have led to an increased incidence of interdisciplinary collaboration in a variety of health care settings. I would be interested in articles which describe the experiences of nurses working in such teams. In particular, I would like to see comment on institutional factors which either facilitate or inhibit the practice of genuine interdisciplinarity.

The need for nurses to be political

In the hope that Contemporary Nurse will reach a broad nursing audience, I am writing to ask that you consider publishing articles addressing primary health care and the need for nursing to be involved in national and international health debates. I believe that a large number of nurses continue to solely focus on individual client care, believing that primary health care, which is inextricably bound to political debate, is 'not their business'. Whilst recognizing the importance of individual client care, it is also apparent that if nurses are serious about improving the health and well being of the community, a broader more political approach is required. It would be interesting to contrast the numbers of nurses who have written to their local newspaper, politician etc, against those who have sat at the morning tea table and discussed the shocking state of nutrition or self care of one of their clients.

Midwives clinic

My reasons for writing are twofold. Firstly, it provides me with an opportunity to thank the team of caring midwives from the Midwives Clinic at the Madbury Hospital in South Australia. This clinic enables women with uncomplicated pregnancies to 'get to know their midwife during the antenatal period. Such clinics have operated for some time in Britain, although in these instances midwifery care is extended to the intra and postpartum stages. Secondly, I would be interested to read articles based on similar midwifery units, either from the perspective of the consumer or the provider of this type of care.
